What is Square?

An illustration of a student thinking about what a square is.

A square is a two-dimensional geometric shape with four equal sides and four right angles (90 degrees). It's a type of quadrilateral, meaning it has four sides, and it's also a special case of both a rectangle (having all sides equal) and a rhombus (having all sides equal and opposite sides parallel).

Key Properties of a Square:

  • Sides: All four sides are of equal length.
  • Angles: All four interior angles are right angles (90 degrees).
  • Diagonals: The diagonals (lines connecting opposite corners) are equal in length and bisect each other at right angles.
  • Symmetry: Has rotational symmetry of order 4 (can be rotated 90 degrees and still look the same) and has four lines of symmetry.

In simpler terms, a square is a perfectly symmetrical shape with four equal sides and four square corners.
